Rick/SYSOP: Okay folks, let's get rolling...
Mike Lamb: ?
Rick/SYSOP: <Banging gavel>
<Hold your "?"s for a moment, please, so I don't loose
them...>
Welcome to a formal conference with Mike Berro and
Chris Caracci of...
MicroIllusions. Tonight's subject is Photon Paint
2.0, although...
I'm sure they will discuss other matters if asked
nicely 8)...
You may have heard that MI has thoughtfully agreed to
donate a copy of...
Photon Paint 2.0 as an "electronic door prize" for the
CO tonight...
the way that will work is that, at some random point
tonight, I will...
call a recess and we'll have the drawing... anyone in
the room at that...
point will be eligible. Until then, don't worry about
it...
Mike, Chris, Welcome! Care to make any opening
comments? GA please.
MikeB/MI: Just want to say it's a pleasure being here, and to
ask how many here have Photon Paint 2.0? ga
Rick/SYSOP: Show of hands, everyone with PP 2.0, say "Yes" or Aye
or something. GA folks.
Joe Hughes: Not yet
Mike Lamb: nay
Bill: Hasn't arrived yet. <frown>
Karl Sparklin: Not yet.
andrew: nope
DAN WOOLDRIDGE: no
Thomas Holaday: ?no
Rick/SYSOP: Looks like you're ahead of the wave, Mike! Great time
to talk about the...
Chris: Should I turn red, or what?
Rick/SYSOP: new features you've added...
Okay folks, the floor is now open. The ?s posted
earlier have scrolled, so I...
Thomas Holaday: ?
Rick/SYSOP: will ask everyone to queue up again, please.
Mike Lamb: ?
Rick/SYSOP: 1) Thol, GA please.
DAN WOOLDRIDGE: ?
Thomas Holaday: Any suggestions about best way to use HP Scanjet files
as input for Photon Paint?
Scanjet can produce raw black and white bitmaps at
30-0 dpi.
ga
MikeB/MI: Thol, PP2.0 reads only IFF pics, but reads them in any
mode. You first need...
Karl Sparklin: ?
MikeB/MI: ...to convert the images to IFF. I'm not familiar
with the scanjet format,...
]..so I can't direct you to a converter. ga
Rick/SYSOP: Thol, any followup? GA
Thomas Holaday: The format is raw 000111 white and black dots. Is it
tough to cobble that into IFF if I have the IFF spec?
no header, just bits. ga
MikeB/MI: Thol, is there any info about the size of the pic in
the file? ga
Thomas Holaday: no info in file, but I'm making the file so I can put
it there. Scanjet --> AmigaDOS file is done.
ga
MikeB/MI: Thol, it can be done. The Amiga screen bitmap is just
ones and zeros, and it is converted to IFF by...
..standard routines, so something could be cobbled
together. ga
Thomas Holaday: thanks. ga
Rick/SYSOP: 2) Mike Lamb, GA please!
Mike Lamb: I have a needed..
interest in contour mapping, and I had heard that PPII
indeed has that capability, any elaboration please?
ga

Chris: Mike L.: Without going into a lot of detail, the
contour map...
...function does allow the "draping" of a brush over a
previously...
prepared background. The brush is then rotated with a
version...
of the tilt function and then finally rendered (with
light and...

psuedo-3d shape.

DAN WOOLDRIDGE: Hello. I,m sorry to say I don't have Photon paint. Am
considering between yours or Digi-Paint. Can you sell
me on yours?
Chris: Dan: Do you have all night? Honestly I could, but
perhaps you..

Rick/SYSOP: Chris, list the 800 number right now!
Chris: all: Okay, 800-522-2041.
Rick/SYSOP: Is that a "9 to 5" number?
Chris: Yes, Pacific time.
MikeB/MI: Rick, 9-5 PDT, and outside CA only.
Rick/SYSOP: Thanks... Chris, could you at least give us the major
points (thanks Mike)...
on which PP differs from Digi-Paint or the other
packages? GA
Chris: Dan and all: I think the brush manipulations, in
particular the..
.."Wrap On" functions are yet to be duplicated. And
most of our..
functions are faster. The multiple-page and animation
capability..
..hasn't been done yet, either. Photon even in 1.0

Chris: Karl: As usual, there are keyboard commands for
everything. When..
..you are going from page to page to touch up
differences one from..
..the other, you usually don't want to fool around
with menus...
..Well, you don't have to. You can copy one page (a
background..
..for instance) from one page to the next and
automatically open..
..new pages as you do so with just two keystrokes.
Then, you can..
..go from page to page in order, or skip to the one
you want. The..
..key to Animate the whole thing is simply an "a". You
can ex-..
..change pages, delete the one you're on or all BUT
the one you're..
..on, Merge one to another. The keyboard commands are
especially..
..handy when you are placing a previously prepared
brush on suc-..
..cesive pages. You can leave it in place as you
manipulate the..
..pages with the keyboard, and know it is in the right
place. ga
Rick/SYSOP: Nifty. Karl, any followup? GA
Karl Sparklin: <grabbing for checkbook> Sounds great! You mentioned
importing....
animations. Must they already be in separate frames,
and in HAM?
ga
Chris: Karl: No, they don't have to be in separate frames,
but yes, they..
..must be in HAM. ga
Karl Sparklin: Thanks. ga, Rick.
Rick/SYSOP: Chris, since we're talking about anims, I have two
questions...
first, you said you're conforming to the newest
standard...
how backward-compatible is that with older formats;
what CAN'T you handle, and...
what programs can't handle your output? Second, how
do the anim capabilities..
of PP 2.0 compare with a dedicated anim package such
as, say, MovieSetter? GA
<Remember, folks: the queue is open, register your
questions with "?">
MikeB/MI: The "opt 5" format has been around for over a year,
and I know of no commercial anim programs...
...that do not use it...
..Early versions of Aegis' Animator used an earlier
version, but no longer..
Chris: Rick: PP2.0 is not primarily an anim package, but the
anim features..
..are very complete for a paint program. There's an
adjustable delay..
andrew: i]/?
line noise
Chris: ..an automatic "looping" function and a reverse as
well. There are..
..limitations of course. This is uncompressed
animation we
'.. WE'RE talking about. (I love typos, don't you?)
But it is about..
..as fast as can be. Also, we are stuck with whatever
RAM is available..
..but when you are using PP 2.0 to prepare an anim,
you will find it..

Chris: ..the perfect tool to get the motion you want WHILE
YOU ARE DRAWING. ga
Rick/SYSOP: Okay. So if someone was going to get HEAVILY into
animations they might be...
better off getting a dedicated animator, perhaps?
Whereas with PP 2.0, it's...
"Hey, we have this outstanding paint program, and it
also lets you do...
fairly nice animations if you find you need them
occasionally"? Is that...
a fair assessment? GA
Stan Kalisher (Impu: ?
Chris: Rick: "Fairly nice animations"? No that's not quite
right. While 2.0..
..may not be a complete anim environment, the stuff
made with it..
..does look as good or better than what a more
"helpful" (read, ..

Rick/SYSOP: Okay, I sit corrected...
Pete Gould, you had a comment? GA please.
Pete Gould: Could we type shorter lines? ...

Pete Gould: xtalk ga
more...
I'm on my PC, not my Amiga. ga
Rick/SYSOP: what terminal program are you using? GA
<Sorry, hit resend..>>
Okay, there is an option for enabling line wrap...
hit your HOME key to bring up the map, or ask for
help...
it should be there in the list. It's probably off;...
turn it on and the lines should auto-wrap. BUT...
let's all try to use shorter lines, anyway...
5) Stan Kalisher, GA please!
Stan Kalisher: Chris - The ONLY dissapointment I found in PP 2.0 was
not using 12 Bit ....
mode to get cleaner HAM images. Any Idea what this
was bypassed ? GA
MikeB/MI: Stan, for one thing, it would have made animation very
RAM intensive...
Bill Valentine-Coop: OP/exit
MikeB/MI: ...It would also make many of the complex operations
very slow. ga

in 12 bit mode, then saving to ILBM. Once the IMage

Stan Kalisher: I don't the speed would be that much of a problem. If
you look at Diamond's
Big Brush operations, they aren't really that much
slower than PP 2.0 and all
is done in 3 4 bit buffers. .. I would also
(personally) like "bluing" GA
Rick/SYSOP: Bluing? GA
MikeB/MI: Stan, the light source adds a lot to the complexity
of...
..the calculations. Bluing?
Stan Kalisher: Rick - "bluing" is the MidWestern animation term for
having a shadow of the ..
previous cell frozen in the background for making
current cell movements....
